Creature CollectionLong ago when the initial Umbras plummeted into the realm of Crius, fragments of their formidable power splintered away, birthing the original Omnianders. These diminutive yet sentient beings bear a striking resemblance to humanoid reptiles, evoking the three distinct Umbra lineages from which they sprang. Dwelling within densely clustered societies, the Omnianders are renowned for their lighthearted existence. This peculiarity arises from a shared delusion, one that convinces them that the material world they inhabit is, in truth, the afterlife—an ethereal realm where mortality holds no sway.
This curious collective belief gives them an astonishing supernatural fortune. Boulders, seemingly destined to crush, instead veer away; arrows, unleashed by masterful archers, swerve wide of their mark. The paramount pursuit for every Omniander centers around mirth and amusement, achieved through mischievous antics, spirited altercations, and beguiling deceptions. Notably, the majority of novelty items in Crius trace their origins to Omniander ingenuity. The passage of time is marked by Omnianders naming years after the most memorable or uproarious pranks—a peculiar custom that finds them disclosing their age through the revelation of their chosen jestful year.
In Omniander society, the rigidity of gender roles dissolves into fluidity, as these beings effortlessly shift their sexes, adapting to communal needs or simply indulging in lighthearted transformations. Just like their gender ownership is something that Omnianders do not understand, in their society things are to be shared amongst each other. Except for the Umbra stick, this is known as the mantle of leadership within an Omniander tribe and is bestowed upon the current leader. It is an ancient staff adorned with the tooth of an Umbras—a relic imbued with the power to determine authority. Interestingly, despite their genesis from Umbras, Omnianders harbor no sense of kinship with their forebears. Instead, an inexplicable disdain festers, driving them to outwit or harm Umbras whenever opportunities arise.
The triad of Omniander subspecies mirrors the archetypal Umbra varieties: the Gale, the Trench, and the Mire. First off the Mire Omnianders, affectionately known as Mites. These diminutive creatures excel as subterranean diggers, inhabiting underground caverns and surface-adjacent burrows. They ingeniously tend to above-ground gardens nourished by the earth below. Characterized by robust dorsal plates, formidable talons, and a crest of fur running along their spine, Mites often bear a verdant coat of moss and foliage. Prizing their solitude, they harbor a conviction that other races only intrude upon the exuberant festivities they seek to partake in Crius.
From the lineage of Mire Omnianders emerges the Magmander, a rare offshoot nurtured by placing an unhatched Mite egg in proximity to flowing lava. The alchemical process, perilous and exacting, could culminate in incineration, should mishandling transpire. Magmanders bear a resemblance to their Mite forebears, yet their obsidian dorsal plates crackle with ember-like fissures, and their claws emit an infernal red glow. This subspecies, veering toward aggression, wields a fiery breath weapon, setting them apart as more pugnacious among their Omniander kin.
Enter the Trench Omnianders, affectionately dubbed Trenchies. These semi-aquatic variants carve their abodes upon sandy shores, fashioning structures from the very dunes they inhabit. Defined by their leisurely demeanor, Trenchies dedicate themselves to basking beneath the sun's embrace and leisurely angling by the shoreline. Their appearance evokes reptilian cetaceans, with thick, blubbery hides, webbed appendages, and elongated crocodilian snouts.
Lastly, we encounter the Gale Omnianders, referred to as Galiants. These lithe beings rank as the most nimble among Omnianders, their lives divided between lofty tree abodes resembling oversized bird nests and the ethereal embrace of the clouds themselves. Galiants possess specialized foot pads that transform vaporous cloud matter into solid terrain, enabling them to traverse these ephemeral expanses. Their lithe frames, adorned with vibrant plumage and vivid neck frills in the males, exhibit a distinctive aesthetic. While flight eludes them, their gliding ability, facilitated by skin flaps called patagia, permits graceful aerial movement. The patagia, serving a dual purpose, diminish their terminal velocity, thereby safeguarding them from fatal falls, and, when extended, display patterns resembling immense eyes—an ingenious deterrent to would-be adversaries.
