Creature CollectionIn the world of Crius, there exists a race of extraordinary beings known as the Kandjii. These mysterious wanderers are unlike any other of the other races known to Crius. With a large domed head adorned with long flowing tendrils which ends in a fish-like tail, that when not swimming through the water allows them to hovers above solid surfaces with ease. They also possess a natural affinity for the arcane.
Legend has it that the Kandjii's ancestors were once mere gelatinous fish with stinging tendrils, but their fate changed when the god of magic, Nexum, took an interest in them. With his powerful magic, Nexum experimented on these simple creatures, feeding them a magical strain of sea plankton that transformed them into the immortal beings they resemble today.
The Kandjii still age just like any other race, but once they hit a certain age, their biology reverts them back to their juvenile form. Eternity of life can be a lonely journey, and the Kandjii who spend more time on the surface often create a familiar to keep them company - a water spirit that never ages and brings solace to their immortal companions.
The Kandjii's domed heads contain all their vital organs, and while the rest of their body is similar to an ooze, giving them shape and form, it is not needed for their survival. Even while they sleep, the rest of their body disappears back into their dome.
Their magical plankton still bears a mark in them, allowing them to make brilliant displays of bioluminescent light from their head and tendrils. Their connection to the plankton also enables each Kandjii to communicate with each other telepathically, tethered by the magic that courses through them.
One of the most unique features of the Kandjii is their lack of eyes. Instead, they navigate their environment by reading electromagnetic signatures, giving them a 360-degree view of their surroundings no matter the lighting. This skill comes in handy when they are not on the surface, as they spend most of their time in small settlements at the bottom of lakes, rivers, or their stronghold city of Escaria, where natural light is scarce.
The Kandjii are noble and altruistic people who travel around Crius, working as advisors and orators to those who seek their wisdom. Unable to reproduce normally, they migrate to a specific hot spring altar to Nexum every hundred years and pray, hoping that the god will bless them with another magical plankton so they may create another Kandjii.
But the Kandjii face many dangers. Poachers seek to capture them, paying high prices for their heads or other body parts that can be used for special potions and magical items. There is also a monster that hunts the Kandjii, a leviathan of the deep that is drawn to the Kandjii. It is believed to be the original of the Trench Umbra known as The Below, a horrifying creature that fed on the Kandjii ancestors. On top of all that, if they do not return to the water in an appropriate amount of time, they can wither and die.
The Kandjii's journey is a fascinating tale, filled with wonder and danger. As they travel the world, their wisdom and knowledge remain unparalleled, and their magical abilities are a force to be reckoned with. But they never forget their humble beginnings, and the magic that transformed them into the immortal beings they are today.
