Creature CollectionThe Falz, humanoids from the Dream realm otherwise known as the Everdream Expanse, began as living paper created by the god of dreams Revedra. They were meant to inhabit the dreams of mortals, but constant exposure to their endless creativity and emotion granted the Falz sentience and a thirst for individuality. Seeking freedom, many of them ventured into the Material Plane to explore the world they had once only observed through dreams.
Falz resemble humanoid origami figures, their bodies crafted from magical, malleable paper. This unique composition allows them to shift their appearance, blending seamlessly into different societies by mimicking the physical traits of other humanoids. Intricate tattoos, which signify their memories, adorn their bodies, with the most significant memories etched in sharp, vivid detail.
Falz are masters of illusion magic, their prowess allowing them to fake any innate abilities of other races. Even though they can adopt the appearance, they do not gain the abilities they only mimic the look of them. Their magical paper bodies enable them to absorb ink from books, gaining knowledge and sharing it with other Falz through a touch. However, they are highly vulnerable to fire and shy away from sharp weapons, preferring magic and blunt instruments. Despite not needing food, Falz must sleep to rejuvenate, a perilous necessity that risks attracting Revedra's relentless hunters the Oneironauts. The Oneironauts, or dream mages, make it their sacred mission to protect the dream realm. This includes returning any Falz they find on the material plane to the dream realm, so as to not upset the balance between the two realms.
Falz are unparalleled artists and poets. With a touch to paper, they can conjure breathtaking moving paintings. Though their visual art is beautiful poetry holds the most special place in their hearts. Each Falz’s name is a line from a personal poem, unique like a fingerprint, a tradition that binds them to their creative spirit. They name themselves upon writing their first poem. Their artistic talents and poetic nature make them unique and valued members of any community they join, adding a touch of the dream world to the mundane reality of the Material Plane.
Falz do not form settlements, preferring to blend into various societies across Veargreum as being too open on who they are might attract Oneironauts. Their rare appearances and unique abilities make them both revered and mysterious. Some cultures love them for their mastery of the arts or employing them as spies where they can put their acting and forgery skills to good use. Others find beings from another plane that can look like anybody untrustworthy.
Falz on the material plane age according to the lifespan of the race of the one whose dreams they are linked to. Each year in the material realm counts as a year in the life of that race. In the Dream realm they are immortal, continuing a cycle of new connections when their mortal plane link dies. If however their link dies while they're outside the dream realm they will lose their immortality and die within the average lifespan left of their last connection. Upon death, their bodies transform into lanterns, glowing with the light of their spirits drawn towards Revedra to be reabsorbed. If prevented from returning to the Dream realm these lanterns can give rise to Ink Blights—small, ink-dripping reptiles with fragmented memories of their past lives.
