Creature CollectionJust south of the coast of Veliko lies a chain of small islands, among which is the peculiar Dwindle Key island. This tiny landmass is small for more than one reason, its origins shrouded in a tale of unintended magic and unintended consequences.
Long ago, a society of small mushroom people known as Cap Horrors sought to enhance their strength and size. Despite their limited knowledge of the arcane arts, they sought the counsel of a traveling mage who offered them guidance on spells to achieve their goal. Excited by the prospect, the Cap Horrors hastily constructed a tower based on the mage's blueprints, though their lack of expertise led to a flawed construction.
Unaware of their error, the Cap Horrors captured a local predator, hoping to absorb its strength and size through the tower's magic. However, the imperfect construction of the tower caused the spell to backfire, shrinking the predator into a smaller, weaker version of itself. Worse still, the magical backlash rippled into the Cap Horrors causing them to form mutagenic spores which quickly spread across the island, causing the fauna to slowly shrink over time and enchanting the flora to begin producing the shrinking magic.
Now, any newcomers to Dwindle Key island gradually shrink over time, their size diminishing as they venture further inward. Those who stick close to the coast or soar high in the skies above can maintain their original size, but the heart of the island holds a strange enchantment that diminishes all who enter.
Strangely, an illusion seems to veil the island from outsiders, making it appear perpetually distant no matter how close one sails. Only those unfortunate enough to wash ashore after shipwrecks have managed to reach the island, their fate sealed as they too succumb to the shrinking magic.
Amidst this diminutive landscape lies the settlement of Rivermilk, a village predominantly inhabited by descendants of Tabaxi who have transformed into miniature versions known as Pawlings. Tensions run high between the Pawlings and the local Cap Horrors, as the former blame the mushroom people for their diminished state.
