Crag Chompers are colossal, cetacean-like predators belonging to the dreaded Mire Umbra family, renowned for their stealth and brute force. These monstrous creatures make their homes high in the mountains, anchoring themselves to cliff faces with their specially adapted tail fins, waiting patiently for unsuspecting prey to pass beneath them. When a meal ventures into range, the Crag Chomper releases its grip, hurtling down the slope with its cavernous, tooth-filled maw wide open, crushing everything in its path.
Their massive bodies blend seamlessly with the rocky terrain. The exposed parts of their skin mimic the jagged, weathered stone of the mountains, with even their boulder-sized teeth camouflaged to appear like rocks. They remain so still for such long periods that moss and other plant life often take root on their backs. The Crag Chomper only moves when it senses a significant meal approaching—anything less than a large caravan is hardly worth the energy it takes to haul its massive form back up the slope.
To climb back up, the Crag Chomper relies on the armored scoots along its belly, which not only protect it as it slides but also provide traction on the treacherous ascent. Despite their bulk, Crag Chompers are surprisingly strategic hunters. As members of the Umbra family, they possess a cunning intelligence that while less impressive then other Umbras is more than the common beast, preferring to nest along common migration routes of slow-moving, large prey. They can remain perched in one spot for weeks, waiting for the perfect moment to strike. Their camouflage helps them avoid confrontation with other mountain-dwelling Umbra species like the territorial Whistle Umbras, who would otherwise attempt to drive them away.
The patience, size, and raw power of the Crag Chomper make them one of the most feared creatures in the mountain ranges, capable of reducing entire caravans to nothing more than broken bones and dust in mere moments.
This CR13 Creature is called a Crag Chomper and is an Umbra that lives mostly within the Mountains.
